About
The MAT with Single Subject Teaching Credential program prepares effective teachers for classrooms and includes a foundation in social justice and equity in all activities, tasks and learning. Subject areas include Art, Health Science, Biology, Home Economics, Chemistry, Mathematics, English/Language Arts, Music, French, Physical Education, Geoscience, Physics, General Science, Social Science History, German, Spanish
- Year 1 – Earn your teaching credential
- Year 2- Earn the Master’s in Teaching (you have up to seven years from admission to return for this portion of the program)
Upon completion of the credential coursework, program candidates may complete an additional sequence of five Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) courses. Candidates will learn how to critically examine the sociocultural and sociopolitical contexts related to the broad fields of educational research and schooling. Candidates will apply such analytical skills to develop and implement standards-based curriculum in diverse settings using best instructional and inclusive practices that positively impact the learning of all students including English Learners and students with disabilities. Candidates will also create an original Teacher Action Research Inquiry Project using practice-based methods in diverse educational settings.
Admission Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Subject Matter Competency (i.e. CSET or subject matter program)
- Writing Proficiency
- Overall GPA of 2.5 (or 2.75 in last 60 semester / 90 quarter units)
- Minimum of 45 hours experience working with diverse learners within the age group/population you want to teach – strongly recommended but not required
- 2 references (on required forms)
- Academic reference
- Reference who can attest to your experience with children
- Essay (graduate writing sample with prompt provided)
- Certificate of clearance (background check)
- Group Interview
- Mandated Reporter training
